Promoting the Sport

Life is busy. Amidst the many things that we have going on, there is kayak fishing. For many of us, it has become what has been described as an “addiction”. This in turn has led us to work very hard in promoting the sport, so that others may also enjoy it. Countless hours can be spent promoting kayak fishing. Certainly there is something nice about being able to share with others what we have come to appreciate so much. It is a great opportunity. However, are we remembering to promote the sport to the most important people in our lives?

Awhile back my daughter came outside to meet me when I arrived home from a fishing trip, as she always does. After she went through the litany of questions she normally asks, she tells me: “Daddy, I want to put on your hat and hold a fish.” Of course I could not resist the opportunity to “dress her up” with my YakAngler hat, Buff headwear, and sunglasses. I sat her in my kayak and put a redfish in her hand… then it was picture time! After a brief photo shoot she tells me: “Daddy, I want to be a fisherman.”

Those words sent me on a multi-day reflection on the importance of promoting the sport to the most significant people in my live… my family. Those words caused me to refocus on the importance of fostering and instilling in my children a love of the outdoors and of kayak fishing, as it is something that can be taken for granted and sometimes even overlooked. My children are at a very young age and I do not want to miss the opportunity to share with them the joys of fishing as was done with me when I was barely able to hold a fishing pole.

Without a doubt it is easy to get caught up in this busy life. Kayak fishing is a source of good fun and a stress relief. Many of us spend a lot of time on the water and also working hard to promote the sport so that others will also come to appreciate what we enjoy so much. In all this, let’s just remember to promote the sport to the most important people in our lives… our families!

Shane has been kayak fishing since 2009 and is passionate about it. Inshore saltwater kayak fishing is his addiction of choice, however, he enjoys the occasional offshore and freshwater trip as well. He mainly fishes the inshore lakes, bayous, and marshes of Southwest Louisiana but does venture into other territories. Shane is a member of the Hobie Fishing Team and holds Pro Staff positions with YakAngler, Lucid Fishing, and Ship To Shore Co. He was also the founding president of the Lake Charles Kayak Fishing Club. "My simple goal for this blog is to promote kayak fishing as it is something I love. I will post articles, reviews, videos, photos, and basically all things kayak fishing." ~Shane [Shane Coleman] (https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2NDpawIFmAk/VXTdW7z-51I/AAAAAAAABBk/bENRfktWrpA/s539-no/df12fc81-bf77-4b88-8326-f65980b08dca)
