Gone South for Salt!

Spencer's Personal Best Trout!

I had a great opportunity to have Spencer Jones from YakAngler as a guest for a couple of days before he headed to ICast for some media work. Spencer is from Wisconsin and so this northern boy decided to come South for some Salt!

We had a really good time and most of all I enjoyed sharing in his excitement. Spencer was able to have several "firsts" on this trip. The highlights for me were watching him battle his first alligator gar. The three-foot plus fish thrashed around and even went airborne, coming completely out of the water, at least two times. Spencer was also able to land his personal best spec. There was definitely a "high-five" in order after that.

I even had a first on the trip, although mine was not as fun but definitely interesting. We went in the marsh early in the morning and ended up getting stuck in one spot because of the outgoing tide. It was only a few inches deep in that section. So, I had to bail out of the kayak and drag it while walking in knee-deep marsh mud.

All in all it was a successful and beautiful day on the water. Many fish were caught and we were able to get on some healthy specs at a little honey hole later in the morning. The lure of the day for me was a floating rattletrap (gold with black back). The specs hammered it! If you haven't tried these floaters, you may want to give it a shot. It definitely was productive for me and I plan on stocking up on several.

I thought I would share a few highlights from the trip with photos. So without further adieu...

If you would like to keep up with what Spencer is doing you can go to his blog/website, "Trailing Hook Journal", or his YouTube page, "Catch or Release Reviews".

Shane has been kayak fishing since 2009 and is passionate about it. Inshore saltwater kayak fishing is his addiction of choice, however, he enjoys the occasional offshore and freshwater trip as well. He mainly fishes the inshore lakes, bayous, and marshes of Southwest Louisiana but does venture into other territories. Shane is a member of the Hobie Fishing Team and holds Pro Staff positions with YakAngler, Lucid Fishing, and Ship To Shore Co. He was also the founding president of the Lake Charles Kayak Fishing Club. "My simple goal for this blog is to promote kayak fishing as it is something I love. I will post articles, reviews, videos, photos, and basically all things kayak fishing." ~Shane [Shane Coleman] (
